OVIEDO HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
Overview:
The Oviedo High School Athletic Hall of Fame was started in the year 2000 to honor high school athletes, coaches, contributors, administrators and teams for their extraordinary achievements as Oviedo Lions. Through 2021, a total of 145 members have been inducted to the Oviedo High School Athletic Hall of Fame, keeping alive their tradition and spirit, and to honor those persons who through distinguished achievement have excelled as a part of one or more high school athletic programs at Oviedo High School.
The nomination & selection process was updated prior to the 2025 Induction Class.
Eligibility for Nomination:
All nominees will be judged on their significant and/or long-term contributions to Oviedo High School Athletics. Worthy candidates are those individuals who have raised the level of Oviedo High School Athletics through their distinguished achievement, excellence, and contributions in one or more of our athletic programs. Candidates must exemplify the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and moral character.
The categories of student-athlete, coach, team, and special contributor are included on the nomination form. To be considered:
Student-Athlete
- must have had an outstanding career at Oviedo High School within our programs recognized and sanctioned through the Florida High School Athletic Association
- must have displayed good sportsmanship and behavior on and off the field
- high consideration is given to individual state and national honors earned, team leadership, and academic standing
- eligible for induction beginning the 5th year after graduating from Oviedo High School
- high consideration is given to athletes who participated collegiately, professionally, or as an Olympic athlete
Coach
- must have coached at Oviedo High School for at least five years
- must have had an excellent coaching record with high consideration on career record, years coached, championships won, awards won, and professional organization recognition
- must have displayed good sportsmanship and behavior on and off the field
- consideration may be given to other significant contributions to Oviedo High School Athletics
Team
- highest consideration given to teams that have won a state championship
- consideration will also be given to other highly successful teams, including teams that won district, conference, or region championships
- eligible for induction beginning the 5th year after the team accomplishment
- a maximum of two teams may be considered for recognition by the committee in any given year
Special Contributor
- examples include administrators, teachers, staff, volunteers, managers, and athletic boosters
- must have worked or contributed to Oviedo High School Athletics for at least five years
- must have made a major contribution of time and effort to Oviedo High School Athletics
- must display loyalty, pride and dedication to Oviedo High School Athletics
- a maximum of two special contributors may be considered for recognition by the committee in any given year
Anyone may submit a nomination for consideration. All nominations must be fully completed and submitted online. To be considered for the next induction class, nominations must be received by May 1. Nominees that are not selected for the upcoming induction class will be held for future consideration.
Selection:
The Oviedo High School Hall of Fame will have a two-level selection process that will be conducted by the Screening Committee and the Selection Committee. Induction will occur every four years.
The Hall of Fame Screening Committee will annually evaluate nomination of individuals submitted by the prescribed deadline date. They will approve only those individuals who meet the nomination criteria and had significant long-term contributions or accomplishments within Oviedo High School Athletics. Those deemed worthy of recognition will be approved and forwarded to the Selection Committee. The Screening Committee will be comprised of:
- the current Assistant Principal over the Athletic Department of Oviedo High School
- the current Athletic Director of Oviedo High School
- the current Athletic Secretary of Oviedo High School
The Screening Committee will also serve to evaluate and establish induction guidelines on an annual basis. After approving all worthy nominees, the Screening Committee will determine the number of candidates in each category that will be inducted. These quotas will be used to select the induction class after voting by the Selection Committee.
The Screening Committee will decide one of three options for each nominee:
- Approved – Sent on to the Selection Committee.
- Hold for Future Consideration – In most cases, this indicates that additional information and supportive material would be helpful for future consideration.
- Inactive – Nominee no longer considered for induction unless renominated after a one-year waiting period.
A nominee shall be approved and sent on to the Selection Committee if approved by two-thirds of the Screening Committee. If a nominee does not receive two-thirds of the votes from the Screening Committee, they will automatically be held for future consideration.
All nominations that meet the eligibility criteria will be voted on in an induction year. Voters on the Selection Committee include:
- the current Principal of Oviedo High School
- the current Assistant Principal over the Athletic Department of Oviedo High School
- the current Athletic Director of Oviedo High School
- the current Assistant Athletic Director(s) of Oviedo High School
- all former Principals of Oviedo High School
- all former Athletic Director(s) of Oviedo High School
The Selection Committee voting members will receive a ballot of all candidates approved by the Screening Committee. Each member will select ten candidates as their selections to the Hall of Fame. The candidates that receive the most votes will become members of the Oviedo High School Athletic Hall of Fame. In the event of a tie, the tied candidate will return to the Screening Committee for a final vote.
An induction class will include no more than 10 selections that will not include more than two teams or two special contributors.
Induction:
The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is held prior to a home football game in the induction year. All individuals selected will be notified by the Oviedo High School Athletic Department of their induction.
